Is Partition Tolerance Optional?

Coda Hale has an excellent post in which he questions if partition tolerance (the P in Brewer's CAP theorem) is optional. It boils down to the fact that some NoSQL databases claim to be CA, that is consistent and available while completely disregarding partition tolerance. Hale implies this isn't possible and that it means that "developers of these systems do not understand the the CAP theorem and its implications"

Brewer's CAP Theorem, a deeper look

In one of our earlier posts we talk about the CAP theorem and its place in the NoSQL domain, essentially how each NoSQL data store picks two of the three principals of the CAP theorem. Well in this post we discuss an equally important theory or concept, BASE.

What is BASE? Basically Available, Soft-state, Eventually consistent. Essentially it’s the logical opposite to ACID in the relational world.

This post by Julian Browne dives into the CAP Theorem in a much greater depth and introduces us to BASE as well.
