MySQL's NoSQL Poll

MySQL is currently hosting a poll in which they have asked respondents to answer the following question:

Which open source NoSQL databases are you using?

While there is not enough of responses, currently at 112 at the time of writing, it's still interesting to see the responses. One note about the results is that multiple databases were allowed to be selected. Here are the current results, as of 3/22 at 10:45pm, of some of the various NoSQL databases.

How Riak is helping to power AOL's AdLearn Adverstising Platform

Interesting post on how a developer at AOL is using Riak in AdLearn. What is AdLearn?

AdLearn is the brains behind AOL's network advertising business. It attempts to find the best ad for a given impression. An impression is the displaying of an ad on a piece of inventory. A piece of inventory might be a banner on a website, for example. AdLearn takes many factors into account including past performance, targeting, campaign type, etc. to schedule the right ad for any given impression.

Moving from CouchDB to Riak

Linkfluence has written a post discussing their decision to migrate away from CouchDB and to Riak. Why would they decide to move approximately 35 million documents and over 2 TB of data? According to their post three reasons:

  • Scalability
  • Versionning
  • Stability

In addition to discusses the issues they ran into with CouchDB they also discuss why they chose Riak and why they decided to enlist the assistance of Basho by obtaining a support contract.

Riak SmartMachine Benchmark: The Technical Details

Joyent has published the results of performance tests they have executed against Basho's Riak Key/Value NoSQL database.

The goal of the study was to demonstrate a baseline for users to understand Riak’s performance, stability, predictability, and linear scalability.  The systems were not tuned for optimal performance.  Instead, we chose to take standard 4 GB Riak Smartmachines and demonstrate throughput and latency for various access patterns and object sizes.
